At a service in Tarbert on Sunday , ten elders and two deacons were admitted to office in the new North Harris Free Church congregation.

The congregation came under the wing of the Free after breaking away from Tarbert Church of Scotland.

About a third of the Tarbert congregation voted to quit the denomination in protest of the decision to allow gay ministers and the departure from Biblical teaching.

The service was conducted by the interim moderator, Rev Dr Iain D Campbell, who was assisted by assessor elders from the Presbytery in forming the kirk session.

All had all previously served as office-bearers in Tarbert Church of Scotland.

The service was well attended, and since it was the last Sunday of the school term, it included the Sunday School children singing and receiving books.

The books were given out by Rev David Macleod, who was also admitted to the Free Church in October.

Mr Macleod is serving as locum minister in North Harris currently, and the congregation met after the induction service and formally agreed to request the Presbytery to enable them to call David as their minister.

Western Isles Presbytery has agreed to meet on Tuesday 20 January to moderate a closed call to Rev David Macleod as minister of North Harris Free Church.
