A teenager was caught driving without a licence while taking a car on a test run.

Dylan Baskin, of County Donegal, Ireland, only held an Irish provisional licence when police stopped him on North Street, Sandwick, Lewis, Stornoway Sheriff Court heard.

Procurator fiscal Karen Smith said he was planning to buy the Honda Civic and wanted to try it out first on 6 November.

But police in the area undertook a number plate check of the vehicle which “flagged up on the national computer with possible insurance difficulties.”

They stopped the 17-year-old and discovered he did not have a full licence and no co-driver.

Sheriff Eric Brown fined him £240 and imposed three penalty points.
