The first day of a winter ferry service is off to a bad start this weekend with doubt if the ship will show up.

The first three runs of the MV Lord of the Isles between South Uist and Mallaig are cancelled, said operator Caledonian Macbrayne.

It is unclear if the vessel will arrive in time for the last scheduled trip of the day.

The ship has undergone a month-long extended refit on Greenock.

No show for ferry

She was delayed in leaving the Clyde and the uncertainty means many travellers will have changed their plans.

The ferry is operating the second season of a three-year pilot.

The direct link to Mallaig halves the time of the present seven hour voyage from Lochboisdale to Oban.

Islanders campaigned for the service over the last ten years saying it would create a much needed economic boost, help the tourism and fish-farming sectors and help counter the high unemployment rate in the islands which is double the Scottish average, by regenerating the economy and attract exiles back to live on Uist.

Shipping operator Cal Mac said a decision whether Satuday night’s last sailing would go-ahead will not be known until the morning.
