The final of this year’s BT Alba Debate competition was held this evening at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh between teams from Millburn Academy from Inverness and the Nicolson Institute from Stornoway

The Inverness team consisting of Catriona Morrison and Ceitlin Smith and the Nicolson Institute consisting of Iain Murdo MacMillan and Christina Louise MacLeod treated the audience to an excellent debate with the Nicolson Institute finally emerging as this year’s champions.

It was a closely fought debate and posed a difficult evening for this year’s judges.

Christina Louise MacLeod was presented with the trophy for the Best Speaker of the Debate, by Dòmhnall Iain Mac Ille Dhuinn.

The three judges; Rosemary Ward, Director of the Gaelic Books Council, Matthew MacIver, Honorary Professor of Gaelic at the University of the Highlands and Islands and Roddy John MacLeod, Deputy Chairman of the Scottish Land Court and Sherriff at Edinburgh Sherriff Court spoke enthusiastically about the standard of Debate.

Calum Iain MacLeod,Chair of the Debate Management Committee said: “I am delighted at the high standard shown in tonight’s Final.

“It is an excellent showcase of the skills of our youngsters and is testament to the hard work taking place in our schools and homes.

“The BT Alba Debate continues to go from strength to strength and is a highlight on the Gaelic event calendar.”

Ghabh a’ chuairt dheireannach de Dheasbad BT Alba 2010 àite ann am Pàrlamaid na h-Alba eadar sgiobaidhean bho Sgoil MhicNeacail agus Acadamaidh Allt a’ Mhuilinn.

Ann an sgioba Sgoil MhicNeacail bha Christina Louise NicLeoid agus Iain Murchadh Mac a’ Mhaoilein agus air an taobh eile Ceitlin Nic a’ Ghobhainn agus Catriona Nic a’ Ghobhainn bho Acadamaidh Allt a’ Mhuilinn agus chualar deasbad air leth le Sgoil Mhicneacail a glèidheadh a’ phrìomh dhuais.

Bha taghadh gu math duilich aig na britheamhan ri dhèanamh.

‘B e Christina Louise NicLeoid à Sgoil MhicNeacail a ghlèidh duais Neach-labhairt as Fheàrr ann an Deasbad 2010 agus ‘s e Dòmhnall Iain Mac Ille Dhuinn bhon BhBC a thug seachad an duais.

‘S iad na trì britheamhan Rosemary Nic a’ Bhàird, Stiùiriche Chomhairle nan Leabhraichean, Mata MacÌomhair, Àrd Ollamh aig Oilthigh na Gàidhealtachd ‘s nan Eilean agus Ruairidh Iain MacLeòid a tha na Iar Chathraiche air Cùirte Fearann na h-Alba agus a tha cuideachd aig Cùirt an t-Siorraidh ann an Dùn Èideann.

Bha na britheamhan uile ag aontachadh gu robh ìre farpais na bliadhna seo air sìor èirigh.

Thuirt Calum Iain MacLeoid a tha na Chathraiche air Comataidh Rianachd Deasbad BT Alba 2010: “Chòrd an oidhche rium fìor mhath agus bha farpais na bliadhna seo aig fìor àrd ìre.

“Tha an Deasbad a’ sealltainn an obair chruaidh a tha a’ gabhail àite nar sgoiltean, nar coimhearsnachdan agus nar dachaighean agus bu chòir seo a bhith na adhbhar mhisneachd dhuinn.

“Tha Deasbad BT Alba a’ dol bho neart gu neart bho bliadhna gu bliadhna agus tha mi an dòchas gu lean seo.”
