Western Isles hospitals have cleanest hands   30/7/10

NHS Western Isles has achieved the highest result in Scotland for hand hygiene compliance, in the latest audit report.

The Board has achieved 99 per cent for compliance with hand hygiene opportunities in the latest bi-monthly report by Health Protection Scotland, which covers May 17th – 28th 2010.

A national target of ‘at least 90 per cent compliance by November 2008’ was set by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing in November 2007. The target was achieved by NHSScotland, and subsequently exceeded in the following seven bi-monthly reports, and again in the latest report.

NHS Western Isles Chief Executive Gordon Jamieson said:“Regular hand washing is widely acknowledged as the simplest and most effective way of combating infection in hospitals.

“Over the past year, thanks to the efforts of our staff, NHS Western Isles has consistently exceeded the national hand hygiene target.

“This latest result in hand hygiene compliance marks continued improvement, and our staff are to be commended for maintaining excellent hand hygiene standards, and protecting patients as far as possible from the spread of infection.”
