There have also been improvements in overall health, life expectancy, patient safety and survival rates for a number of conditions, such as heart disease. At the same time, demands on health and social care services have been increasing because of demographic changes. People are living longer with multiple long-term conditions and increasingly complex needs."

In other words, the NHS is performing far better than in 2006 when Labour were in charge. This is confirmed by Labour's former health minister Jackie Baillie who has stated that, in 2006 (after seven years of Labour Government), Scottish hospitals were the "superbug capital of Europe."

Surely Mr Urpeth hasn't been cherry-picking the report to look for nuggets which support his aim of making propaganda for the Labour Party?

And has he seen the Kings Fund survey which states that 97% of Scottish patients are satisfied or very satisfied with their treatment by NHS Scotland? Or is he one of the 3% who, no matter how hard our NHS staff work to keep them healthy, will still scratch around looking for something to grumble about?

Because grumble is all the Labour Party do. No wonder that the Tories, despite all the damage inflicted by Thatcher on Scotland, are the only credible opposition to the SNP. No wonder that Labour's vote fell to its lowest level for 92 years (since the General Election of 1924) in the Western Isles at the last election.

The Labour Party is disappearing down a political black hole, and reading Peter Urpeth's letters will tell you why.

Sir,

Peter Urpeth (Letters 24th November) claims to have read the report by Audit Scotland on the performance by NHS Scotland. Really?

Then how on earth did he manage to miss the very first paragraph on the very first page of the report which reads: "Over the last decade, there have been improvements in the way health services are delivered and reductions in the time that patients need to wait for hospital inpatient treatment.
