At Sir E Scott School in Harris, the first phase of construction works have been successfully completed and the new school formally opened as planned to welcome its first intake of secondary pupils yesterday.

January will also see the commencement of the second phase of works  which comprises the demolition of the Old Hostel offices (to provide car parking and bus drop-off facilities) as well as the demolition of the 1970’s school building to allow the new main campus to be fully finished. Completion of the next phase remains on programme and the primary school and nursery are due to occupy their new homes for the start of the academic term in August.

Martin Joyce, Head of Operations at Sgoiltean Ùra, stated: “We are delighted that the third of the six new schools has also completed as intended to allow the new secondary school to open to pupils in January 2012. Achieving the date was a key target to ensure the remainder of the academic year could continue as planned.”

Education chair Morag Munro said: “The completion of the first phase of works at Sir E Scott is fantastic news for the pupils, staff and community alike and we look forward to seeing the remainder of the facility fully finished in July 2012”

Cllr Angus Campbell, leader of the Comhairle stated “The completion of this phase of works marks another important milestone for the Sgoiltean Ùra project. Secondary pupils at Sir E Scott are starting this year with access to the excellent facilities that this new school provides, and primary pupils can look forward to moving into their new accommodation later in the year. I’m delighted to see the progress that continues to be made with the Sgoiltean Ùra project as another important target is met on-schedule.”

The third week in January will also see the second and final phase of works at Point Primary School completed with availability of the new synthetic all weather sports pitch which has been constructed on the site of the former Bayble Primary School and is immediately adjacent to the new school.

The three other remaining schools in the Western Isles Schools Project remain on programme for completion - West Side Primary School, Barvas in March 2012, the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway in July 201 and Daliburgh Primary School, South Uist in August 2012. Balivanich and Point Primary Schools successfully opened to pupils in August 2011.

The Western Isles Schools Project is a £125 million project which will deliver five nursery, five primary and two secondary schools as well as an computer hub and office accommodation across geographically remote sites on the Isles of Lewis, Harris, Benbecula and South Uist. Following their completion, a 28 year facilities management contract will commence to maintain the schools until 2039.
