Members of the Uist Otters basketball club were put through their paces by coaches on Saturday at their first weekly team training session in Sgoil Lionacleit in Benbecula.

The club has been set up by basketballscotland in conjunction with Active Schools, and is being supported by The Scottish Salmon Company.

Local coaches, Angus Carruthers and Naomi Coleman have divided the young people training at the club into four teams, with both girls’ and boys’ teams competing in the under-12 and under-14 age groups.

Training, including skill development drills and friendly matches, will take place on Saturdays from noon to 2pm at the school.

In March, the younger teams will travel to Inverness to compete in the Highlands and Islands Under 12s Primary Championship.

The under-14 teams will take part in the Under 14 North of Scotland Competition.

Talented players from the club will also be given the chance to attend the basketballscotland ‘Future Starz’ national camps, a basketball player development programme open to players from across Scotland.

John Kerray, basketballscotland Highlands and Islands regional development manager, said “It is great to see a business recognising the value of sport in the local area and I could not be more pleased to see how much more accessible basketball is becoming to young people of all abilities in the Hebrides.

“The launch of the Uist Otters is an exciting moment for us and we are delighted to have the support of a company like The Scottish Salmon Company, which is so closely linked to the local community.”

New players of all skill levels are encouraged to get involved with the Uist Otters, and anyone interested in attending training sessions should contact Angus Carruthers at acarruthers4@hotmail.co.uk.
