A new homeware and clothing store is opening up in Stornoway.

The Original Factory Shop is setting up in the displaced Peacocks outlet in the Macaulay Road Co-op.

Stornoway is one of the first locations in Scotland to come as a “capsule store” under the chain’s expansion plans with aims for 50 new outlets over the next three years, creating around 400 jobs.

Originally founded in 1969, the business now has 170 stores across the UK.

Managing director Phil Briggs said: “Our shops sit at the heart of local life, making a difference in communities.

"This commitment to store opening targets over the next three years is testament to the importance of convenience stores and the role that our shops play in local life and will help provide more job opportunities locally at a time when they need them most."

The firm says: “We retail a wide variety of goods for all ages and genders including clothing, footwear, cosmetics and fragrance, fashion accessories, electrical goods, housewares, home furnishings and toys.”

The shop pledges to bring customers “big brands at bargain prices” to Britain’s local high streets.

“We source “must buy” quality ranges at unbelievable prices, bringing out the bargain lover in everyone so we can satisfy our customers.

“With stores nationwide, we bring our customers big brands up to 70% off across multiple departments including fashion, beauty, home and more.

“High street cut price labels were how we started the business and still form a part of our range today.”

Peacocks is shutting on Saturday after the Co-op terminated its lease. The fashion retailer rented floor space in the Co-op for the past 12 years. The troubled fashion chain collapsed into administration in November, closing over 400 stores across the UK and owing creditors, suppliers and landlords £70 million.
