New online selling rules affect local traders               28/5/14

Local traders which sell through the internet or by mail order will be affected by new rules being introduced in June

Changes to consumer regulations cover the amount of information that businesses must provide to consumers about the goods and services they provide.

This is to allow consumers to make an informed choice about the goods and services they are seeking to purchase.

The new rules also clarify the circumstances under which consumers can cancel their contracts when they have bought something through a distance contract or off trade premises. In addition, the current cancellation period is increased from 7 to 14 days.

A spokesperson for the Comhairle’s Trading Standards Service said: “it is important that traders understand and implement these new rules and they can download guidance documents from the Trading Standards Institute website.

“Some of the new rules are quite technical and our officers are available to provide any further clarification or assistance that traders may require.”

The spokesperson continued, “failure to comply with these new rules could prove costly for traders and we would advise them to take the time to study them and amend their documentation and websites so that they are ready for the 13 June.
