An island church at the centre of a congregation split is to get a new minister.

Around 200 worshippers broke away from Stornoway High Church in protest of the Church of Scotland’s decision to allow gay ministers and the departure from Biblical teaching.

Now the residual congregation have chosen Rev Dr Wayne Pearce as their pastor.

The High has been without a minister since Rev Willie Black retired early in 2011.

Mr Pearce is to leave the APC to join the CoS to take up the appointment.

Since 2010 he has been been the APC minister for Skye and Harris.

Raised in Tillicoultry, his was ordained as a pastor of a Congregation Church in Dundee in 2002.

He and his wife Margaret have three children, Duncan, Bethany and Mark.

The induction service at the High Church next month will be attended by Right Rev John Chalmers, Moderator of the Church of Scotland.

High Church Session Clerk, John Cunningham, said Dr Pearce's appointment comes after the congregation of Stornoway High Church has come through a challenging period.

He said: "We had prolonged vacancy compounded by the departure of a significant proportion of the congregation over the Civil Partnerships and the Ministry issue.

“But all that is in the past now and we believe God is doing a new work in Stornoway High. We've seen a renewed sense of unity and purpose as undiscovered talents and gifts have emerged across the congregation.

The induction takes place on  6 February.
