The first new social rented homes built in Uig in Lewis for 40 years have been completed.

Hebridean Housing Partnership (HHP) has constructed four houses at Crowlista.

The development comprises a mix of one and two bedroom properties to reflect changes in waiting list trends and in the family composition of applicants.

The development - built by Calmax Construction - has been called Leana Ruadh following consultation with the local community.

Norman M Macleod HHP’s development spokesperson said “I am delighted to see the completion of these new homes after a 40 year gap.

"This shows HHP’s commitment to providing good quality affordable housing throughout the Western Isles."

Local councillor Norman Macdonald said: "We need new quality homes in rural areas as we try and retain our families and encourage others to move here."

The development was supported by Hamnaway Estate and the local Grazings Committee who made the land available.

Services have also been provided to enable land adjacent to be developed more easily for self build or for another development.

Funding for the project was provided by HHP, the Scottish Government and the Comhairle.
