Four new board members have joined Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

Three hail from the Western Isles while the fourth is a regular visitor to the islands.

Jenny Gilruth, education and skills cabinet secretary announced the appointments today.   

John MacDonald is a native Gaelic speaker, originally from South Uist, who lives in Edinburgh.

Also hailing from South Uist where his late father was a Gaelic teacher for 40 years is Donald Kenneth (DK) MacPhee.  

The fourth appointment is Michelle Macleod, originally from Lewis, who is a Professor of Gaelic at Aberdeen University.

Canadian Robert Dunbar has been Professor of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh since June 2013. He is one of the foremost experts in the world on law and policy for linguistic minorities.

The appointments run four years until August 2027.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig is a statutory public body responsible for safeguarding the future of Gaelic in Scotland; for promoting the use and understanding of the language and for developing and supporting Gaelic education and culture.
