Stornoway guesthouse operator Alistair Maclennan has been declared as a new councillor for the Ness/ Westside ward.

Mr Maclennan of Newton Street, Stornoway, who stood on an independent ticket, was the only person to put their name forward for election by today’s deadline.

He previously worked for the Comhairle and is a former secretary of Unison local government Western Isles branch.

Mr Maclennan recently launched a competition to guess the start date of the new Stornoway ferry has been launched.

The winner gets a £100 shopping voucher while proceeds go to the Stornoway Fishermen’s Mission.

Continuing delays to strengthening the ferry pier in Stornoway harbour has prevented the MV Loch Seaforth from taking up commercial service.

The Ness/ Westside seat became vacant following death of councillor  Kenneth Murray who died on 23 December aged 64 years.
