A commercial manager with an island civil engineering firm has been appointed as the new chief executive of Stornoway Port Authority.

Alexander D Macleod - from Point in Lewis - is due to take up the post on 27 July.

The 46-year-old has been involved in a number of major infrastructure projects at Stornoway harbour over many years including the recent upgrade works at number three pier.

 

 

New boss appointed to run Stornoway harbour

From 1996 to 1998 he worked on the construction of an expanded harbour in the Port of Auckland for the 2000 America’s Cup event. His employer, Fletchers Construction - one of New Zealand’s largest construction companies - won the contract to build a new marina and wharves plus reclamation work.

 

Mr Macleod, his wife and young family live in Knock, Point, on a croft which has been in his family for generations.

 

His uncle and grandfather were all fishermen working out of Stornoway. His great grandfather was skipper of the herring drifter, Muirneag.

 

Harbour board chairman, Captain Robert Frater, said: “It is clear Mr Macleod is passionate about Stornoway harbour and he is committed to addressing the many challenges in managing and improving the port for the benefit of all of its stakeholders.

 

“The board is delighted that Mr Macleod has accepted the position of chief executive and is confident that he is very well equipped and placed to meet the varying demands of the post.

 

The post came vacant after Jane Maciver departed in January.

The role has been temporarily occupied by former harbour boss, John Maclennan.
