Island communities have been fundraising to help those affect by the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

In Tong, a takeaway curry night was organised by a local Nepalese chef, Deepak Gurung, and his family and friends.

Mr Gurung said: “Fortunately all my family in Nepal are safe, but seeing the devastation back home and feeling so helpless, we decided we needed to do something to try and help.”

Local businesses donated ingredients and 500 curries were sold, raising over £3000.

A take-away curry night was also organised by people in Uig.

One helper, Janet Macleod, said the group were astounded at the response.

She said: “Basically, we ran out of food after 40 minutes, served over 70 meals and made a staggering £1200.”

The organisers worked together with Third Sector Hebrides to promote and publicise their events.

It is anticipated that the Western Isles fund will close at the end of May when all funds will be directly donated to the DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee) which co-ordinate and deliver on the ground aid relief.
