A military helicopter diverted from major Nato war games to help in a land-and-sea search for the missing skipper of the MFV Louisa which sank off Mingulay, near Barra, on April 9.

The crew of the naval aircraft heard about how ordinary islanders were scouring the rocky shorelines of bays and inlets.

They were participating in the international Exercise Joint Warrior, being staged in the north of Scotland, and gave up their off-duty hours to fly aerial sweeps out at sea looking for fisherman Paul Alliston.

The four crew of the MFV Louisa abandoned the vessel when she rapidly sank.

The liferaft failed to inflate and the fishermen were up to their necks in the cold sea, clinging to the side of a drifting, semi-submerged, broken raft.
