MV Hebrides cleared for duty

30 March 2023

Skye triangle ferry, MV Hebrides, has been cleared for passenger carrying duties.

Investigations into the root cause of Tuesday’s fire alert in the vessel’s engine room were launched.

Damage has been repaired and the ship has received permission from maritime authorities to resume commercial service.

During the day a backlog of traffic for North Uist was cleared and the vessel combined a Harris-bound run with a Lochmaddy call this evening.

Normal timetable is set to commence out of Tarbert in the (Friday) morning.

Fire broke out in her engine room at sea as she set plotted a course to Lochmaddy on Tuesday.

Her crew extinguished the fire and the vessel returned to Uig pier in Skye. Three fire crews attended at the quayside.

Passengers and vehicles were taken ashore. No injuries were reported.

The incident occurred on the first day of normal ferry services to North Uist and Harris following a ten week closure for pier construction works.
