A motorcyclist who ignored repeated informal warnings about his driving skills from police landed up in court.

James Maciver of Riverview House, 1A Newmarket, Lewis, pleaded guilty to careless driving at Stornoway Sheriff Court.

The 22-year-old accepted he failed to maintain proper observation and control, accelerating too fast from a standing start despite stationary traffic in front of him.

Procurator fiscal Karen Smith said he braked harshly causing his motorbike to skid and collided with a vehicle in Francis Street in Stornoway town centre.

Both his motorbike and the other vehicle were damaged.

Happening during the Hebridean Celtic Festival, the street was busy with people including police officers on foot patrol who witnessed the incident, she added.

He had previously “received a number of warnings from police about the manner of his driving” but had apparently not heeded the advice, said the fiscal.

His solicitor said Maciver’s job as a plumber could be affected if he lost his licence.

He acknowledged the penalty points “bound” to be imposed as part of his sentence would mean a six month disqualification under the totting-up procedure.

However, Sheriff David Sutherland did not apply any further points. He banned Maciver for three months and fined him £300 to be paid at £50 per week.
