Newspapers are set to be flown into Uist for the first time in five years.

From Monday, dailies will be available in shops in the mornings after a deal was struck to reintroduce air freight deliveries.

Weekday services leaving Glasgow will depart at 7.15am carrying the island’s supply of newspapers, landing one hour later before being distributed to newsagent and shops between Berneray and Eriskay.

Residents will be able to conveniently purchase newspapers by mid-morning instead of waiting for the ferry arrival in the afternoon or early evening.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has warmly welcomed the development.

Late daily newspaper arrivals have been a bane of life in Uist Since April 2013 after distribution was switched from plane to ferry.

Mainland papers are sent up via the North Uist ferry, MV Hebrides, after the newspaper distribution committee stopped the plane transportation contract.

It meant a delayed read for islanders as the ferry does not dock in Lochmaddy until 3.45pm on four days a week under her summer timetable.
