More time for tourist who smeared excrement on hotel beds     15/9/14

A tourist who smeared excrement in two Stornoway hotels has failed to pay compensation for the damage she caused.

Rosemary Kirkham was banned from the Western Isles ordered to pay £1200 for the clean-up when she was sentenced at Stornoway Sheriff Court a year ago.

Last September, a video link was set up between Stornoway Sheriff Court and Eastwood Park women’s prison, Gloucestershire, where Kirkham, was then a prisoner for a separate offence.

Kirkham has yet to be sentenced for the offences. She had been given 12 months to pay for the cleaning up and replacing a soiled mattresses.

Lawyer Angus Macdonald said her benefits were slashed in half but she was willing to make good the damage.

Kirkham, 49, now of 6 Turnworth Court, Exeter, had pleaded guilty to defecating in her bed at a guest house in Stornoway, and also smearing the excrement over the bed.

She admitted a a similar charge at Stornoway town centre hotel.

Charges that she paraded naked from the waist down by wearing only a T-shirt, displaying her private parts, in public spaces in the guest house and, two days later, in the kitchen of a hotel, had been dropped.

On Friday, honorary sheriff Iain Macleod deferred sentence for four months for good behaviour to give her a further opportunity to make payments.
