Lewis-born minister announced as church moderator     10/3/14

A Lewis-born minister has been announced as this year’s moderator for the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing).

Rev Allan Murray was the minister of the denomination’s Brora congregation until recently.

The 75-year-old hails from Shawbost, Lewis, and was educated in the local school, in Stornoway, and later graduated as a dentist from Glasgow University.

He was ccnverted while working in West Lothian where he attended Bathgate Baptist Church.

After moving to Glasgow he met his wife, Maureen. They have five of a family, now mostly spread around the world.

After working as a dentist for 23 years, Mr Murray felt called to study for the ministry.

He sold his practice and studied at the Free Church College, Edinburgh, for three years, and accepted a call to the charge of Rogart and Scourie in 1988.

When the division took place in the Free Church in January 2000, Mr Murray adhered to the Free

Church of Scotland (Continuing) and ministered to a small group meeting in Brora, and, until 2008,

to two other small groups meeting in Scourie and Lochinver.

Mr Murray retired from the charge of Brora in November 2013, but continues to live in the area and still

worships with the local congregation.
