Island successes at Mod youth singing competitions     16/10/14

 

Island successes continued in the solo and traditional singing competitions at the Mod.

 

In Traditional Fluent U13 Girls, Allison Makay from The Nicolson Institute took the gold badge, with Sgoil Lionacleit’s Marion MacCorquodale winning silver; while in the boys competition Samuel MacAoidh from The Nicolson was awarded the bronze badge.

 

Traditional Fluent Girls 13-15 saw Nicolson pupil Koren Murray Pickering winning the Traditional Silver Medal and a gold badge for her first placing.

 

Mìcheal Callan, of Glasgow who has Uist connections won the boy’s Traditional Silver Medal as well as the Ann Kelly Macdonald Memorial Trophy for the highest marks in the qualifying and the final.

 

Nicolson student Alex John Morrison received a bronze badge in the event.

 

Alex John and Koren also took gold badges in the Duet Fluent 13-15, taking The David CB Maitland Memorial Trophy for highest marks in music.

 

The Traditional Fluent Girls 16-18 competition was a clean sweep for island schools with Mairi MacLennan from The Nicolson in first place and taking The Hugh and Rachel Morrison Taylor Trophy; while Nicolson pupil Isabelle Bain took Silver and Amy MacKay from Sir E Scott given bronze.

 

Isabelle had success again when joined by Amy Shirkie to win gold in the Duet Fluent 16-18. Rachel MacRitchie and Kirsteen MacRitchie from the Nicolson came third equal with Shannon MacLean and Betha Sexton from Mull.

 

Back to the solo singing events competitions and the islands’ juniors made their mark on the scoreboards.

 

Solo Singing Fluent 5-6 saw Sir E Scott’s Luke Johnson awarded a bronze badge, while Solo Singing Fluent 7-8 it was the turn of Bun-sgoil Lionail’s Shannon Marie MacLean to take third place.

 

Second place for a silver badge in 9-10 years section was taken by Erin Anne MacLean from Bun-sgoil Lionail; and Solo Singing Fluent Girls 13-15 saw the An Comunn Gaidhealach Silver Medal and gold badge awarded to Catriona Bain from The Nicolson, with Elizabeth MacKenzie from Bun-sgoil Lionail taking third place.

 

And the An Comunn Gaidhealach Silver Medal in the Boys Fluent 13-15 Solo Singing competition went to Nicolson pupil John Alasdair Bain – brother of Girl’s Silver Medal winner Catriona in a Mod first.

 

Success was had in the senior singing competitions as well with Callum MhicNeacail from The Nicolson Institute taking second place in the Solo Singing Open Boys 16-18 comp; and in the Girls category Emma MacLeod from Sir E Scott took the silver badge – along with The Turiff Trophy for highest mark in Gaelic in two singing competitions – while Isabelle Bain from The Nicolson took third place.
