Royal National Mod Gold Medal, Hebrides News

Mod gold medals won by Western Isles singers              20/10/11

The highly coveted Mod gold medals have been won by two islanders after a series of nerve wrecking competitions over two days.

Catriona Watt of Stornoway gained the highest points and won the ladies Gold Medal in today’s event.

The 26-year-old student at Strathclyde University says it was a tough contest and she still can’t believe she won.

The men’s gold medal goes to Neil Campbell of Balivanich, a development officer with Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

He says he is still trying to take it all after a rush of qualifying competitions over the last 24 hours following months of practices and hard work.

It’s his second attempt at the Mod Gold having tried before when the Mod was in Lewis ten years ago.

The ten-day Royal National Mòd is an annual Gaelic language showcase of music, song and culture which is Scotland’s second largest festival. It has attracted over a thousand competitors and supporters to the Western Isles.
