An island minister who was tragically killed by a car in Edinburgh while attending the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly will be buried today (Wed).

Rev Tom Sinclair, 76, died at the scene on Waverley Bridge where he knocked down by a vehicle last Tuesday. The incident happened just after Assembly finished for the day.

Mr Sinclair, originally from Glasgow, was the serving clerk for the Lewis Presbytery. He had also been a minister in Stornoway’s Martin Memorial Church for nearly 30 years before he retired.

He was also heavily involved in the unsuccessful fight to save Stornoway’s Lews Castle School which was an early trailblazer offering pupils vocational courses.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie expressed their condolences to the present minister, Rev Tommy Macneil, and the congregation when they visited the church the morning after Mr Sinclair’s death on an official trip to Lewis.

Mr Sinclair and his wife Pam lived in Tarbert, Harris. Their surviving son Jonathan, 43, resides in Edinburgh while Andrew died some years ago.

A wake service was being held in Tarbert Church of Scotland on Tuesday night (Tues).

The funeral service takes place in Martin’s Memorial Church at 1.15pm on Wednesday. The funeral lift and procession is at 2pm to Sandwick Cemetery.

Mr Sinclair entered the ministry young after studies at Trinity College Glasgow. He completed his probation in Aberdeen Holburn Central with the legendary Dr Knox.

His first parish was Scourie in Sutherland. He later moved to Martin’s Memorial, Stornoway in the 1970s.
