Minister “misses mark on minimum wage”           6/8/14

List MSP Rhoda Grant has accused the Scottish Government for “failing” to ensure seamen on the Stornoway freight ferry, MV Clipper Ranger, are paid the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

The crew working for Seatruck on the ferry which operates as a freight service between Stornoway and Ullapool is time-chartered by Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries.

Estonian ratings on the Ranger are paid as little as £4.19 per hour and although CalMac have agreed to make the payment to bring these shippers up to the RMT rate for ratings on the Clyde and Hebrides network, Seatruck has refused to accept this move.

Rhoda Grant  wrote to Transport Minister Keith Brown demanding that crew on-board the ferry should receive at least the minimum wage as the service receives a Scottish Government subsidy.

The Labour MSP said: “The Scottish Government and Transport Minister have missed the mark on ensuring workers aboard the MV Clipper Ranger are receiving fair payment.

“It is an outrage that a the Scottish Government are providing subsidy to this service, whilst crew are being paid as little as £4.19 an hour.

“If the SNP had voted for the Scottish Labour amendments to the Procurement Bill in Parliament they would have been able to ensure not only that all Scottish Government contractors were paying the National Minimum Wage, but a Living Wage of £7.65.

“The Scottish Government have failed to ensure workers are paid a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work and are instead scratching around for solutions and passing the buck.”
