A microlight aircraft was damaged after a bird strike forced it to land near Huisinish in North Harris in July.

The light plane departed Sollas, North Uist, and flew north at a height of 500 to 700 ft along the west coast of Harris.

The pilot thought navigating over the centre of the sea channel between the Isle of Scarp and Harris would avoid sea fowls along the cliffs.

However, a bird struck the windscreen which partially broke away, said an Air Accident Investigation Branch report.

The 43-year-old pilot made a "precautionary landing"  on the beach but the wheels sunk into the sand and the aircraft tipped over onto its sail.

Neither the pilot or passenger were injured but the aircraft's wing and fabric were badly damaged.
