Comhairle nan Eilean Siar flew the Red Ensign at its Stornoway headquarters on Merchant Navy Day today to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on civilian seafarers.

The Comhairle  supported a nationwide call for the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag to be flown on public buildings and landmark flagstaffs.

Prince Edward, president of the Seafarers UK charity said Merchant Navy Day "remembers the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy."

Britain relies on merchant ships carrying goods, supplies and food.

In the First and Second World Wars, the merchant fleet played a vital service in transporting food, equipment and essential materials into the UK.

But the ships were easy prey for enemy submarines resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilian seamen.
