Mentor support for young people        3/9/10

A new mentoring programme for young people and children has been launched by the Bridge Community Centre in Stornoway.

It aims to help youngsters and youth who need that extra bit of support in life.

Programme manager Jonathon Maciver explained: “It is a simple idea which, due to its preventative nature, should help young people develop social skills, improve relationships in all aspects, encourage engagement in education, develop aspirations and much more.”

Engagement with the programme is through an open referral process and there are no age restrictions.

The scheme is primarily looking at young people who show signs making poor choices or finding themselves in difficult situations which they may not be equipped to deal with. Young people have the choice of participating in the initiative.

Local volunteers are also being sought to act as mentors. Training will be provided.

Local groups and community councils can get a short presentation about the scheme.

The programme manager Jonathan Maciver can be contacted on 07775667826 or by emailing weevle_s@hotmail.com  for more information or to arrange a presentation visit.
