Rise in membership for Western Isles Conservatives      6/10/14

The Western Isles branch of the Scottish Conservative Party has experienced a rise in the number of people joining.

The association, which held its annual meeting on Thursday, also reports a marked increase in finances.

A branch spokesman said there is “considerable interest and support expressed by the general public at the policies and standpoints the party is currently initiating.”

He said the meeting noted, with delight, the election of Dr Ian Duncan to the European Parliament as a Scottish Conservative.  Dr Duncan paid a visit to the Western Isles in March which included a busy programme and a meeting with members of the local association.

The meeting also noted, with approval, the outcome of the recent Scottish Referendum and many members expressed their appreciation of the Western Isles result.

The meeting considered the activities and programme for the ensuing year and in particular the General Election which is due to take place in May 2014.  The list of prospective parliamentary candidates was reviewed.

The Association generally meet on a bi-monthly basis and the meetings usually take place in Stornoway with the next meeting scheduled to take place on Thursday 27 November.

The programme for the coming year includes a function at Christmas and plans for former leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Annabel Goldie, to visit the Western Isles in March

Office Bearers unanimously elected for the year are Ranald Fraser, chairman; Donnie Macleod,

vice-chairman; Murdoch Graham, secretary; Peter Macleod, treasurer and Elizabeth Macphail, minute secretary.
