HM Coastguard is urgently appealing for information on a vessel after receiving a mayday alarm just before 1am this morning.

The distress message gave the name of the boat as Hanson 2 though the spelling is unclear.

The mayday was received on the west coast of Scotland between Ullapool and Mull.

Lifeboats searched the area thoroughly for six hours with nothing found.

Island mariners and fishing vessels are asked to keep an eye out.

A number of relay broadcasts to vessels in the area have also been made with nothing seen or heard.

No other distress alerts have been received.

If anyone has any information on this vessel they are urged to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
