Gordon Murray, SNP councillor for Stornoway North, has written to Malcolm Burr, the chief executive of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar requesting that a report associated with windfarm development community benefit be submitted to the next series of Comhairle meetings in February.

Cllr Murray said "There was discussion on community benefit at the last meeting of the Comhairle and I want to ensure that we maximise the opportunities and social value that could be gained from renewables investment for many years to come."

He added: "I was interested to learn that Highland Council had set up a "Social Value Charter for Renewables Investment which informs investors of their expectation of community benefit at £12,500 per MW.

"I strongly believe that Comhairle nan Eilean Siar should seek , at a minimum, community benefit no less than Highland Council's level."

"I will certainly be urging councillors to support calls for windfarm developers to give communities a fair share."
