Islander shot maurading deer           13/2/12

The problem of maurading deer around South Uist villages landed island man Eric Twelves in court.

But Sheriff Gerad Sinclair took a rare step and granted Twelves, of Locheynort, South Uist, an absolute discharge when he appeared for sentencing at Lochmaddy Sheriff Court.

Twelves had pleaded guilty to shooting a deer without permission from the estate owner.

His plea of not guilty to shooting the deer after sunset was accepted after it emerged the incident took place before official dusk.
