Pupils on Barra face being taught maths over the internet after no teachers applied for a vacant post.

A “virtual classroom” may be established with an off-island tutor giving lessons via tele-links.

Two full-time permanent maths teachers are required at the school but one of the posts has been unfilled for some time.

As a temporary measure, different supply teachers have taken maths classes since the start of term three weeks ago.

Now the school plans to introduce e-learning as a solution to the recruitment problem with a view to starting the new method this month.

It is understood parents have concerns over the internet lessons - not least the reliability of broadband connections - and are due to meet with school management.

A Comhairle spokesman said: “We cannot force people to apply for the post no matter how attractive it is.”

He added: “We have put in place alternative arrangements over the past three weeks.”

The school and the education department is “looking at various options” and have provided “appropriate interim arrangements” to ensure classes "continue as normal."
