Volunteers are being sought to help an animal rescue charity in the Western Isles.

The British Divers Marine Life assists with sick, injured or stranded marine animals around the UK coasts and is operated entirely by volunteers.

There is we shortage of volunteers locally as the Outer Hebrides sees a large number of strandings every year of many different species of whales, dolphins and seals. This year there has been the add problem of oiled seabirds being washed ashore.

A marine mammal rescue training course has been organised at Coastguard Station in Stornoway on Saturday 4th February for new volunteers.

The course runs from 9.30am until 5pm and trains people in the first aid and safe refloatation of whales, dolphins and porpoises using specialised equipment and the first aid and rescue of abandoned seal pups, including their transport to the BDMLR Highland Seal Hospital in Caithness or other rehabilitation centres across the UK.

The morning session will cover marine mammal biology, species ID, physiology, first aid, assessment and rescue techniques.

The afternoon will consist of three practical exercises using life sized water filled models of a seal pup, a Common dolphin and a Pilot whale.

The first will show how to safely handle, assess and lift seal pups. The second shows handling, lifting and first aid techniques for dolphins.

During the third exercise you will also be shown how to refloat the two tonne Pilot Whale model using our special refloatation pontoons.

More information is available on the training section page atwww.bdmlr.org.uk.
