The Marie Curie Western Isles service -  which provides care and support to people living with a terminal illness - has announced an extension to its service in partnership with NHS Western Isles.

The recruitment of six new nurses and healthcare professionals to provide care across Lewis and Harris will complement the existing three nursing team members who provide overnight care to residents in Uist, Benbecula and Barra.

Marie Curie Outer Hebrides Fundraising Group chair John Masterson hopes it will encourage islanders to join the group and support fundraising.

The group is holding an information event on Thursday 27 August at 6.30pm at the Bethesda Nursing Home in Stornoway.

John’s brother Bob was cared for by Marie Curie nurses at the end of his life which enabled him to die at home in Perth surrounded by his family.

John said: “After my brother died I wanted to do something to help this really worthwhile charity. They were there for my family with compassion and comfort, and sadly there are many others who need their help.

“Our volunteer fundraising group has been going since 2013 and we’ve collected at supermarkets and had great support for the Great Daffodil Appeal."

He added: "A group of pupils in the local school in Tarbert got involved by growing daffodils as part of their Saltire Award for volunteering.

"We’re really keen to hear from more people eager to support this vitally important local service and hope to have a good turn out to our information evening.”

Lynne Miller, the Marie Curie clinical nurse manager for the Western Isles, said: “We’re delighted to be able to extend our service and support more people living with a terminal illness in the isles.

"Our new nursing team members are excited to get started and will be working closely with NHS Western Isles staff to provide joined up care and support where it is so desperately needed.”

"Two of our nursing team will be at the 27 August event and Marie Curie community fundraiser Vonnie Carson will be talking about how you can help support the care we provide.
