An elderly man found dead in a loch on Berneray, North Uist has been named as Donald Macaskill.

 

The 73-year-old was from the island.

 

A large scale search was launched when he was reported missing on Wednesday.

Coastguard teams, a helicopter and Leverburgh RNLI lifeboat were involved in looking for the man.

The search was stood down at 6pm when his body was discovered.

 

Chief Inspector Gordon MacLeod of Police Scotland said: "Our thoughts at this difficult time are with the family and friends of Mr Macaskill.

 

"I would also like to thank members of the public and other services for their assistance during the search operation.

 

"Our enquiries are ongoing, although there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course."

 

 

 

 

Police Scotland said next of kin have been informed.
