A Lewis man who fell off a two storey high roof is believed to be receiving hospital treatment for broken ankles and wrists.

Daniel McCulloch of Kenneth Street, Stornoway, is also believed to have sustained a head injury and received cuts to his face when he crashed onto the narrow roadway.

The 22-year-old toppled off the roof just a couple of minutes after being after being spoken to by police officers on Thursday evening.

It is understood officers in the nearby police station earlier heard or saw a disturbance in the vicinity.

They went to Mr McCulloch’s corner flat and briefly spoke to him in connection with the disturbance. While the police were still at the premises, Mr McCulloch went onto the rooftop on the Church Street side of the building.

He plunged off the roof, hitting the roadway beside ground floor shops.

Police officers at the flat received a radio alert at 6.44pm and found Mr McCulloch lying seriously injured on the road.

An ambulance plus a paramedic fast response vehicle rushed to the scene

At the time, it was feared his injuries were very severe and it took about an hour to treat Mr McCulloch - both in the street and in the ambulance - before he could be transported to hospital.

It is unclear what Mr McCulloch’s intentions were by going onto the roof. It is unknown if he slipped or intentionally jumped.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 6.41pm on Thursday, police in Stornoway attended at an address on Kenneth Street after officers heard sounds of a disturbance in the nearby vicinity.

“Upon entering the premises, a man in his twenties; who was believed to be responsible for the disturbance, was spoken to by officers.”

“Following further enquiries with other members of the public about the incident, police received a report of a man on the roof of a building.

“Officers attended at Church Street and found a man on the roadside, having from the rooftop.

“This was found to be the 22 year-old man who had been previously spoken to by officers.”

“The injured man received serious but not life threatening injuries and was taken to Western Isles Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.”

In the middle of the emergency, police had to deal with one man who persistently tried to get into the ambulance where Mr McCulloch was being treated.

Another observer said: “I saw one guy in tears running down Church Street. He ran into the ambulance where the injured man was being treated.”

He was thrown out but then went in a side door and was removed again by police.

CID detectives are investigating the incident and are appealing for people with any information to phone 101.
