An islander has been found dead on a shore on Barra.

His body was recovered by a coastguard helicopter around 7am today by Traigh a' Ghoirtein, a small remote beach on the Barra side of the Vatersay causeway.

 

Police, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the local coastguard rescue team took part in a search for the 32-year-old last night.

 

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances at this time and the man's next of kin have been informed.

 

Police officers want to establish the man's movements and are keen to speak to anyone who him walking from Castlebay through Nask on Wednesday afternoon.

 

He is described as standing around 5ft 10in in height.

 

When last seen he was wearing a green top and brightly coloured trainers.

 

Detective Sergeant Iain Morrison said: "Our thoughts are with the gentleman's family and friends at this difficult time.

 

"I would ask anyone with information which could help establish his final movements to make contact with Police on 101.
