Man assaulted police officer                  14/3/14

A Lewis man about to be reprimanded and sent on his way by a police officer assaulted him and landed up in court instead.

Kenneth Maciver, 34, pleaded guilty to hitting the constable when he appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court on Friday.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said Maciver of 11 Vatisker Park, Back, Lewis, was identified as the aggressor in a confrontation with other people in Point Street, Stornoway, one Sunday about four weeks ago.

Police removed him from the situation but he punched an officer on the chest.

Lawyer Angus Macdonald revealed the officers were about to tell him to go home when Maciver lashed out.

The solicitor explained Maciver’s much loved pet dog - which he said had been treated like a child in the family - had been buried the night before after the vet found a “massive tumour.”

Maciver went on the drink, he said.

Sheriff David Sutherland imposed a £300 fined, discount from £450 because he pleaded guilty straight away, to be paid at £50 monthly.
