Kennedy backs direct South Uist ferry 26/8/10

Provost Allan Henderson said: “A Mallaig to Lochboisdale service is the missing connection in the West Highland transport network. The completion of the A830 upgrade presents a real opportunity to put that right.
“The ferry link would bring a welcome boost to Lochaber's economy and make a difference to communities right along the Road to the Isles. It would be popular in summer with tourists and in winter with regular travellers and islanders seeking a shorter and more sheltered crossing.”
Charles Kennedy added: “The current Ferries Review presents an ideal opportunity to give the idea of a Mallaig to Lochboisdale connection a chance to prove itself. It is already clear from the consultation work which the Government has done that the route would be popular with local people and visitors alike.
“Lochaber and South Uist are united in wanting to see the new service established. I very much hope the Scottish Government will listen and agree to a trial period to establish the scale of demand.”
