One person is believed to be in a serious condition following a car smash on Lewis in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police would not say if anyone was injured in the incident but said a “serious” collision had taken place and that emergency services attended the incident.

Locals said a young male was badly injured in the crash which happened shortly before 1am at Lionel in the north of the island. Only one vehicle was involved in the incident.

It is understood the casualty was given emergency resuscitation at the scene and rushed to hospital in Stornoway.

His condition is unknown.

Both lanes of the main road on the A857 are closed by the Cross Skigersta junction. Diversions through side roads circling villages are in place.

Specialist police investigators from Dingwall were travelling to the island to investigate. The road will remain shut until police have examined the scene.
