Over £1,800 has been raised for the families and children who lost loved ones in the MFV Louisa fishing boat tragedy following an event in a Stornoway pub.

Pub session group, the Critters, staged a musical fundraiser in the Criterion bar in Stornoway.

Three men died when the Lewis crab boat, MFV Louisa, sank off Mingulay on April 9 in what is the worst sea fishing accident in the Western Isles for 50 years.

Martin Johnstone, 29, from Caithness and Christopher Morrison, 27, of South Harris, perished when the vessel went down went down at anchor in calm conditions about 12 miles south of Barra.

Skipper, Paul Alliston, from Lewis, is still missing despite extensive searches.

Lachlan Armstrong from Stornoway survived after managing to swim to shore.

Organiser Iain Mackillop said the total tallied £1,814.

The Criterion Bar donated £1,000 from its own lottery bonus ball card sales which are earmarked for local charities.

Musician Finlay Smith of Barvas donated three guitars for auction while patrons donated cash into buckets going round the pub at the event held earlier this month.

Mr Mackillop said: “As part of a small community, the Critters wanted to do all they could to support and help the families of the crew.

“The Criterion may be the smallest of the Stornoway bars but judging by the amount raised they have big hearts.”
