Barra charity Gàradh a’ Bhàgh a Tuath has been awarded Big Lottery funding to build a new centre and expand its community horticultural project.

The group advances the care, support and training needs of adults on Barra and Vatersay with disabilities, mental health problems or substance misuse problems.

Gàradh a’ Bhàgh a Tuath grows a large range of vegetables, flowers and fruits and offer them to these local communities to reduce the carbon footprint of the island.

The project aims to improve access to training and employment for disabled people.

Members of the group operate a community café in Northbay Hall every Thursday where they gain skill in cooking and serving customers.

The project also creates volunteering opportunities for older people, as well as giving them a chance to make new friends.

The funding will be used to build a new centre as an administrative hub for local organisations providing services to the adults.

It aims to be become the main site for community interaction and inclusion activities for islanders with support needs.
