Iain Macaulay, Lord Lieutenant for the Western Isles, has spoken of experiencing the first official ceremony in the UK in 70 years to crown King Charles III, the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, as monarch.

Mr Macaulay said: “Attending the coronation service was a huge personal privilege and it was an honour to represent the Western Isles at such a significant event.”

He added: “Saturday 6th 2023 was a memorable occasion at an extraordinary time in our history. The diverse congregation participating in the magnificent surroundings of Westminster Abbey demonstrated the 21st century blend of ancient ritual and contemporary life in Britain.

“There was a palpable sense of belonging and togetherness throughout the proceedings, together with a sense of awe and wonder as people from all walks of life gathered together for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

“It is an experience that I will always treasure and I’m hugely appreciative of everyone who organised local events and gave of their time.

“There are too many too mention, but include Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, local churches, the Volunteer Centre Western Isles, community and armed forces organisations, pipe and brass bands and members of the lieutenancy.

“As Lord-Lieutenant I am sincerely grateful to all those who celebrated this momentous coronation event in the Western Isles.”
