A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a car crash in North Uist.

 

The badly injured casualty was airlifted to hospital in Glasgow.

 

The man, in his thirties, was driving the Volkswagen Passat, which smashed around 9.30pm last night on the loop road at Lochmaddy, on the north entrance to the village.

The accident occurred between the sheriff court corner and the north junction to the main road.

 

The casualty was the solo occupant in the car. No other vehicle was involved in the collision said police.

 

Emergency services attended the scene.

 

Police said the man was later "transferred to hospital in Glasgow where he remains in a critical condition."

The loop road is closed with local diversions in place.

Officers from the road policing unit at Dingwall are travelling by ferry to investigate the incident.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t already been in touch to make contact via 101.
