Final fitting out is being undertaken on the new £42 million Stornoway ferry, MV Loch Seaforth. Though delays have held back her departure from the Flensburger shipyard in Germany, the lack of an operational pier at Stornoway means the vessel will have to wait before she can commence sailing on the Ullapool route.

Legal safety certificates to enable the ship to commercially sail with passengers and freight lorries are still to be issued.

MCA inspectors are due to examine the vessel in Germany and sign the safety certifications in the coming days.

It is unclear when the ferry will actually be homeward bound or if she will stay at a lay-by berth abroad.

The pier in Stornoway is not ready to accommodate the vessel.

Works to upgrade and extend the ferry berth has been hit by delays.

No date is given for the pier’s completion though it is hoped to be ready before the end of the year. Bad weather may create further delays.

Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) - the Scottish Government company which owns the ships for leasing to Cal Mac - said the ship will be sailing to Scotland in the coming weeks.
