The new £42 million Stornoway ferry is to undergo upgrade work during her first annual drydock.

The German-constructed MV Loch Seaforth is still under builder's guarantee.

She headed off on Wednesday to Cammell Laird in Birkenhead near Liverpool.

It is understood she will have work undertaken on nagging faults, technical issues and any necessary adjustments to her propeller shaft and engines.

She will also have her stern ramp widened.

Cal Mac said her stern ramp is being extended and there will be "general service to systems and engines."

During dry dock the Seaforth will be fitted with the innovative and advanced fuel monitoring systems leading to significant environmental and economic benefits.

The MV Isle of Lewis is taking over the Stornoway Ullapool passenger service in her forthnight's absence.

Northlink vessel MV Hildesay will operate the overnight freight service until November 12.

This will be a reciprocal arrangement with the MV Isle of Lewis covering one of Northlink's dry dock periods on the Orkney or Shetland routes in early 2016.
