Recent figures showing that Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is the third highest local authority which procures produce from local, small and medium enterprises were welcomed by local Highlands and Islands MSP, Donald Cameron.

The figures, which were revealed by the Federation of Small Businesses, show that 33.3% of Comhairle procurement comes from local businesses, which is well above the national average of just 20%.

Only Shetland Islands Council and Orkney Islands Council pipped Comhairle nan Eilean Siar to the post of highest procurer.

Donald Cameron said: “I am delighted that Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are the third best council in Scotland for buying locally, and it is a testament to the great products that are produced on the islands.

“While all councils need the flexibility to buy from further afield, I hope that the Comhairle can continue to back local businesses and build on this figure.

“Indeed, I feel that other Scottish local authorities can look to our island councils for some inspiration in order to increase their own local procurement.”
