Western Isles Constituency Labour Party are backing Kezia Dugdale to become the next leader of the Scottish Labour Party.

Local chairman Billy Mackinnon said the Western Isles nomination for deputy leader goes to Richard Baker.

Labour Highlands and Islands MSPs, Dave Stewart and Rhoda Grant, also favour Kezia Dugdale in the leadership contest called after Jim Murphy quit in the aftermath of the party's disastrous results in the Westminster's elections.

Dugdale's plan for reform is open up the party, engage people and look forward to the future.

The lessons learned from the referendum must be used to "rebuild and refresh (the party) so it is fit to represent modern day Scotland," she says.

She draws on an analogy from a visit to the Western Isles where she learnt about seaweed harvesting.

If roots remain anchored in the ground after cutting, then the plant will regrow with vigour, she says.

Thus, she rejects "ripping our party out at the roots" though accepts unless "we don’t change our ways, there will be nothing left to protect."
